Looking Back... Eventing at Tryon 2018

04 September 2022

The most recent Eventing World Championships...

Ros Canter is heading to Pratoni this month to defend her World titles some four years after she secured a dramatic golden double in Tryon.

The North Carolina venue welcomed the equestrian world in 2018, and it was Great Britain who dominated the Eventing competitions with Team gold and Canter’s Individual victory with the late, great Allstar B.

It was a dramatic competition that went all the way to the wire, with Canter and Germany’s Ingrid Klimke providing thrilling entertainment.

We can’t wait to see who comes out on top in the FEI World Championships in Eventing and Driving in the Italian venue of Pratoni later this month. Eventing begins on 15 September, with Driving commencing a week later – and it’s all live on FEI TV.

Early Running

Four years ago, future Olympic champion Julia Krajewski and Klimke made the early running in the Eventing and their superb dressage scores ensured Germany were top of the standings after the first phase with a record low score.

Great Britain were in second place after day one, but shot up to the top after the cross-country round. Klimke & SAP Hale Bob OLD led the Individual standings with just one day to go, with Canter in second and Sarah Ennis & Horseware Stellor Rebound of Ireland in third.

Here’s Klimke and Bob’s majestic XC round…

Canter & Allstar were second last to go in the jumping with British teammates Tom McEwen, Piggy French and Gemma Tattersall having already gone out. Could they secure Team gold and give themselves a great chance of Individual glory with just Klimke and SAP Hale Bob OLD to go?

They laid down a stellar clear ride, ending on 24.6 points, cementing the gold for Great Britain, silver for Ireland, and bronze for France in the Team competition.

Last to ride was Germany’s Klimke, whose sights had been on the podium since day one. She handled the course beautifully and was well within the time but heartbreakingly knocked down a rail on the final vertical for 4 penalty points and a total of 27.3 points across three days.

It was gold for Canter & Allstar B, silver for Ireland’s Padraig McCarthy & Mr Chunky and bronze for Klimke & SAP Hale Bob OLD.

Here’s Canter & Allstar at their best…

“Allstar B was absolutely amazing,” Canter said. “He was an absolute hero.

“I had an amazing experience in there. I kept saying to myself just let him do his job and I am so proud. He is just phenomenal. There were quite a few tears when I found out, which isn’t normal for me. It’s just incredible for me and the whole support team behind Team Great Britain. It’s just the most incredible feeling, and a very surreal day.”

It was a golden few days for Canter and GB, and they'll hope for more of the same in 2022.

Canter heads to Pratoni with Lordships Graffalo, and she's joined on the British team by three members of last year's Olympic success, Laura Collett & London 52, Tom McEwen & Toledo de Kerser and Oliver Townend & Ballaghmor Class.

With top teams entered by Eventing's other major nations, Pratoni promises to deliver just as much excitement as Tryon 2018.
