What You Need
to Know

Outstanding teams of horses and riders are set to compete at the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games™ Eventing championships...

With medal favourite Michael Jung having withdrawn, the competition is now wide open.

 

Jung will be absent as his mare FischerRocana FST is not sound.  He won individual silver at WEG 2014 with the same mare. The outlook of the competition has changed completely without him. The former world, European and Olympic champion was always the one to beat.  

 

Ingrid Klimke and SAP Hale Bob are a formidable partnership and not to be dismissed lightly. Their strength is cross country and the Captain Mark Phillips’ designed course will suit them well.


Germany are reigning team and individual champions. Sandra Auffarth will now be in Tryon, having originally dropped out, to defend her title as she was the reserve rider for Jung.

Great Britain are a country on the rise in Eventing...

In Normandy, Great Britain won team silver and individual bronze and are a country on the ascent, having won the Europeans in Poland in 2017.

 

The selectors had a headache; it was rich pickings. Many up and coming and established riders in GB are at the top of their form.

 

Piggy French, Ros Canter, Tina Cook, Gemma Tattersall and Tom McEwen have all come up the levels amassing international experience. As a collective, GB must be going to the USA as medal favourites.

 

McEwen, who said he has his eyes firmly on a medal, told the FEI: "I am excited and really looking forward to representing my country and being part of the team." 

 

New Zealand’s team has an enviable mix of quality, experience and legends.

 

Mark Todd and Blyth Tait were both at the first WEG in Stockholm in 1990. Both also retired and then returned to competitive riding. The fact they are both on this team shows neither of them has lost their appetite for success.

 

Jonelle and Tim Price are also travelling to Tryon to represent New Zealand. Jonelle, riding her Badminton winner Classic Moet. This female combination is as good as they come.

 

Australia’s representatives reads like a who’s who of Eventing. Established household names such as  Chris Burton who recently was crowned British Open Champion at Gatcombe.

 

In addition, former Badminton winners Sam Griffiths and Paulank Brockagh, Andrew Hoy, Bill Levett and Shane Rose, are all seasoned professionals. They are going to WEG with a consistent, high achieving team of horses and riders.

The selectors have done the hard part, now it’s down to the riders and their partners to see how they get on...

Home favourites USA will certainly not just be there to make up the numbers.  

 

An impressive team sheet of names such as Lauren Kieffer, Phillip Dutton, Boyd Martin, Lynn Symansky and Marilyn Little.  

 

Of course they have home advantage, but team USA is represented by riders of the highest standard.

 

Those chosen, acknowledge this was a tough team to get on; there was plenty of home grown talent on offer.
