RIDE: Helping our Veterans with Horses

Enjoy our new original series, RIDE...

FEI TV's new five-part series, RIDE, takes a deeper look into the equestrian world and explores the fascinating bond between humans and horses across the planet.

In this first episode, we discover the role horses play in helping veterans who have endured difficult times in service or suffered physically or mentally in the years afterwards. The full version of the film is available on FEI TV, with a shorter version on YouTube.

HOPE is a horse project in the US that is focused on supporting veterans in their recovery and on helping them to get back into civilian life.

Co-founder Cathi Brown explains that the strong relationships formed between horses and those suffering from a mental health condition such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is in part due to their sharing of some characteristics. “Horses are hyper-vigilant and spook so easily,” she says. “They are both in survival mode.”

We meet veterans such as Peggy, Mike and Deion, each of whom have benefitted from their time with HOPE.

“I’m a totally different person out here,” says Mike. “This has helped me so much – I wish I could come here every day”
