WEG Podium

01 August 2018

World champion Gennaro Lendi and his Italian teammates are aiming for Reining glory in the discipline's spiritual home...

Gennaro Lendi says he was "born to ride", but was he also destined to stand at the top of the podium at this year's FEI World Equestrian Games?

Born in Naples in 1984, Lendi and Yankee Gun conquered the world two years ago when they won the Individual gold medal at the FEI World Reining Championship in Geneva.

Now, as he and his Italian teammates prepare for next month's Tryon 2018 in the USA, he tells Equestrian World that he's completely focussed on once again beating the rest of the world.

Gennaro has been focussed on Tryon for a year now, making sure his preparations are perfect.

He says: "I have saved one horse just for this show because I know that only once every four years will I get this chance.

"I will try to do my best and I'm doing everything to get there at the best I can be."

Reining is, of course, a thrilling sport in which riders guide their horses through a precise pattern of circles, spins, and stops. It's not for the faint-hearted, and Lendi and his rivals must #BeFearless to have a hope of gold.

While Gennaro has achieved international success, he has certainly not forgotten his roots and admits he continues to lean on his Italian colleagues and the Reining community.

He says. "There is a really friendly situation and we love to spend time together. We love to talk about our job and help each other and find solutions."
