The Incredible
Laura Hall

15 August 2018

Canadian athlete Laura Hall has used positivity to reach the top of the Para-Dressage world…

On Feb 10, 2012, Laura Hall fell from a horse during a Jumping lesson and suffered a brain injury which resulted in a weakness in her right leg. The prognosis wasn't great and the doctors didn't think that she could get back the use of the leg.

But Laura didn't give up, and her trainer Karen Pavicic believed in her mental strength.

In the latest Equestrian World video, Laura, 42, explains how she has managed to overcome adversity to become a leading Para-Dressage athlete who is dreaming of Olympic glory.

The symptoms from her accident have had a lasting effect.

“One of my big deficits is fatigue,” she says. “I also have weakness on my right side, so it's a lack of strength and a lack of coordination.

“When I get tired it becomes that much worse so I can't walk that well and I will start to slur my words a little bit. Then I struggle with finding words and memory and that sort of thing as well. It's been a steady learning curve.”

Due to an injury to her horse Wendelin, Laura will miss out on next month’s FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon. However, Laura’s positivity means she is already focussing on the next chance of glory.

“I've had to kind of scrap my plans and come up with new ones so I'm still working on that,” she says. “I'm now looking at Tokyo for Paralympics. That's the next major goal.”
