The event was sponsored by Jacobs Café and was organised by hotel owner René Häberli. It took place at Chalet-à-Gobet, a small village located 10km away from Lausanne.
Each of the 11 teams entered to compete consisted of three athletes. The fourth athlete from each nation participated as an individual.
After his initial gold at Copenhagen in 1974, Reiner Klimke (FRG) won his second World title aboard Ahlerich.
The champions of the previous edition, Christine Stückelberger (SUI) on Granat, won the Grand Prix. However, they did not perform so well in the ride off, which was now called the Grand Prix Special, and had to settle for silver. Uwe Schulten-Baumer (FRG) on Madras was in bronze. Anne Grethe Jensen (DEN) on Marzog, who would go on to win the World title in four years’ time, placed fifth.
Once again, the team title went to the Federal Republic of Germany. Switzerland and Denmark followed in silver and bronze respectively. The Netherlands, who would go on to become one the world’s strongest Dressage nations, placed fourth.
