Since the start of the FEI Vaulting World Championship in 1986, the groups of vaulters competing together were referred as teams. In 2011, the FEI General Assembly approved a rule change according to which the former teams would be referred to as “squads”. At the World Championships, squads competed for the first time in Le Mans (FRA) in 2012. According to the FEI Vaulting Rules, a Vaulting squad is composed of a lunger, horse, and six vaulters.
An Official Team Competition, consisting of a free test, was introduced at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2018 and has been in use at FEI Vaulting World Championships and FEI Vaulting European Championships for Seniors ever since.
Germany won the title in the Official Team category followed by Austria, who took the silver, and Denmark in bronze.
Germany (lunger Gesa Buhrig, horse Claus 51) was also dominant among the squads winning the gold medal. Austria, Denmark and the USA bravely battled it out for the remaining medals, all the squads performing memorable routines. The Austrian squad (lunger Cornelia Trimmel, horse Leokado) could not compete alongside their historical four-legged companion Alessio L’Amabile and had to settle for silver while the United States (Carolyn Bland, horse Diva 506) were awarded the bronze.
Germany’s Janika Derks and Johannes Kay aboard Humphrey Bogard OLD (lunger Nina Vorberg) took the gold, facing strong competition from the 2019 European champions and fellow Germans Justin Van Gerven and Chiara Congia with Highlight (lunger Alexandra Knauf), who had to settle for silver. The USA pair Haley Smith and Daniel Janes with Diva 506 (lunger Caroly Bland) were fascinating to watch and rightfully claimed the bronze medal.
The outcome in the Individual male category remained open until the end. The top placings were contested between Lambert Leclezio (FRA) and Jannik Heiland (GER), who were chased by Theo Gardies (FRA) and Juan Martin Clavijo Vega (COL) in top form. After much tension, Leclezio was crowned world champion for the third time in his illustrious career, having won in 2016 and 2018. Jannik Heiland took the silver by followed another Frenchman, Theo Gradies, who won the bronze.
The completion in the Individual female category was also full of suspense. The gold medal ended up going to Jasmin Lindner (AUT), followed by Janika Derks (GER) who was awarded silver, and fellow Austrian and teammate Eva Nagiller, who won the bronze. This was Lindner’s fifth gold medal – and seventh overall – in an FEI World Championship. To date, she is the most titled FEI Vaulting athlete.
