Matthias Lang, who began training in Vaulting at the age of 11 and took part in all the FEI Vaulting World Championships from 1994 to 2006, would go on to claim a third world title at the 2002 WEG. In 2000 the French equestrian magazine L’Eperon named Lang Man of the Year. In 2003, having qualified as a physiotherapist, he received the Bernard Destremau prize awarded by the French Academy of Moral and Political Science to students who participate in high level sport while pursuing successfully an academic career.
Lang officiated as an FEI judge from 2013 to 2021.
The individual female champion from the FEI World Equestrian Games™ (WEG) 1998 in Rome (ITA) Nadia Zülow (GER) secured her second world title ahead of fellow countrywoman Nicola Ströh in silver and Kerith Lemon, one of USA’s greatest vaulters, in bronze. Zülow would go on to win her third title at the 2002 WEG in Jerez de la Frontera (ESP).
The German male vaulters faced some serious competition as well. The first non-German male vaulter to win individual gold was Thomas Fiskbaek (DEN). After securing bronze in 1992, he became world champion at the 1994 WEG in The Hague (NED). In a similar fashion, Devon Maitozo (USA) won bronze in 1996 before being crowned world champion at the 1998 WEG. In Mannheim he was awarded his second bronze medal behind champion Matthias Lang (FRA) and Gero Meyer (GER), who took the silver.
Despite the challenges, Germany retained the team title ahead of Switzerland and Austria.
