No less than 83 individual athletes from 17 NFs, including Argentina, Australia, and Brazil, participated in the event. Some 14 teams competed.
The Championship had been allocated initially to the Pforzheim Riding Association in southwestern Germany but, due to financial and organisational limitations, the event had to be moved 80 km away to the Heilbronn Riding Association. Significant efforts were made to provide the best possible conditions for both horses and athletes.
Due to the large participation, the seating capacity of 1,700 proved inadequate and improvised solutions had to be found.
For the first World Championship on home ground, Germany maintained its dominance winning all but a single medal – individual bronze in the male category, which went to Thomas Fiskbeek of Denmark.
The 1988 champion Christoph Lensing conquered his second individual title followed by Thomas Föcking who was awarded the silver medal.
Barbara Strobel, Silke Michelberger, and Tanja Benedetto won gold, silver and bronze respectively in the individual female category.
And, of course, the team title went to the host nation followed by Switzerland and Poland.
