Apeldoorn (NED) played host to the FEI Driving World Championships for the third time after successful events in 1976 and 1982. The magnificent grounds of the late 17th century Het Loo palace provided a majestic backdrop for the event.
In 1971, the palace, which through the centuries had been used as a residence by the Dutch Royal Family, had been turned into a museum. Nowadays the stables house a large collection of carriages from the Royal Stables.
Ijsbrand Chardon (NED), who had come second at Ascot two years prior, won his first individual gold beating Sweden’s Christer Pålsson and Hungarian Jozsef Bozsik.
Remarkably there were three female drivers. The best placed among them was Deirdre Piri (USA), ranking fifth.
The team podium was exactly the same as two years earlier. The host nation secured team gold thanks to the efforts of Ad Aarts and Theo Weusthoff. Silver went to Hungary and bronze to the Federal Republic of Germany.
