The eighth FEI Driving World Championship for Four-in-Hand were held on the historic racecourse at Ascot in Great Britain.
The Ascot racecourse, which is used for thoroughbred horse racing and has established itself as a national British institution, is located some six miles from Windsor. It was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, who, when out riding from Windsor Castle, had come upon an area of open heath that looked, 'ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch'. The first racing meeting was held on 11 August 1711.
Dutch driver Tjeerd Velstra took the individual gold, four years after his victory on home ground at Apeldoorn. Teammate Ijsbrand Chardon was in silver ahead of defending champion Laszlo Juhasz (HUN), who took the bronze.
The team gold also went to The Netherlands, with Theo Weusthoff as the third member of the winning team. Team silver and bronze went to Hungary and the Federal Republic of Germany respectively.
