Girl power

Gail Greenough (CAN)/Mr. T was the first woman to qualify for the final. Not only did she qualify, but she won individual gold going clear in all four rounds thus becoming the first woman, first North American and the youngest person to win a Jumping World Championship.

Gail Greenough competed against Pierre Durand (FRA)/Jappeloup, Conrad Homfeld (USA) Abdullah and Nick Skelton (GBR)/Apollo, all of whom had won medals in the team competition.

Greenough was the undisputed winner ahead of silver medal winner Conrad Homfeld, who had a fence down with each Raffles and Jappeloup. Nick Skelton had had a difficult round with Mr T. scoring 10 penalties but had gone clear on the remaining three horses. Pierre Durand finished in fourth place on 32 points.
