The fifth FEI Eventing World Championship, which was held from 1 to 5 September 1982, returned to Europe to the village of Luhmühlen in northern Germany. In 2005 the site hosted its first CCI5* and has since become one of the sport’s most prestigious venues.
The return to Europe meant higher participation. A record number of 77 horse and rider combinations, 57 of which finished the competition, took part in the event.
The team medals went to Great Britain (gold), the Federal Republic of Germany (silver), and the USA (bronze).
The British team was victorious thanks to Lucinda Green (Regal Realm); Virginia Holgate (Priceless); Rachel Bayliss (Mystic Minstrel); and Richard Meade (Kilcashel). Meade, who was reaching the end of his brilliant career, had taken part in all the World Championships to date winning two team gold, one team silver, and two individual silvers along the way.
Richard Meade was the outstanding rider of his time, a four-time Olympian (1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976), and the lynchpin of British teams for 21 years. He was a member of Britain's gold medal winning team at both the Mexico 1968 and Munich 1972 Olympic Games. He secured individual gold in Munich making him one of the most successful British equestrians of all time.
Meade also won three European Championship gold and two bronze medals. In 1964 he won the Burghley Horse Trials on Barberry. He was victorious twice at the Badminton Horse Trials: in 1970 on The Poacher and in 1982 on Speculator III.
Richard Meade passed away on 8 January 2015 at the age of 76.
Lucinda Green (GBR) on Regal Realm was the individual champion ahead of Germany’s Helmut Rethemeier on Santiago, and Kim Walnes (USA) on The Gray Goose.
Lucinda Green is considered one of the best cross country riders of all time and is a world and double European Champion, Olympic team silver medallist at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games, dual Burghley, and six-time Badminton winner.
