For the first time, the Championship was preceded by a veterinary inspection, which had become compulsory. Some of the top horses failed at the first presentation but thankfully passed at the reinsertion.
The French team consisting of Michel Robert/Ideal de la Haye, Patrick Caron/Eole IV, Frédéric Cottier/Flambreau C and Gilles Bertrande de Balanda/Galoubet won the team title, ahead of Germany and Great Britain.
Malcolm Pyrah (GBR)/Anglezarke, Norbert Koof (FRG)/Fire, Michel Robert (FRA)/Ideal de la Haye and Gerry Mullins (IRL)/Rockbarton qualified for the for the final in that order.
Scoring four clears in a brilliant performance, Koof was the star of the show and clinched individual gold.
Malcolm Pyrah and Michel Robert tied for silver and had to go in a jump off for the second place with Pyrah the eventual winner.
Michel Robert, who had started riding on a sheep complete with saddle and bridle at the age of four and who had represented France in Eventing at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, won bronze, his first Jumping medal at a major international competition. After competing at two more Olympic Games and countless championships and CSIs, he stepped down from Grand Prix level in 2014.
