The sixth FEI Driving World Championship for Four-in-Hand retuned to the gorgeous grounds of the late 17th century Het Loo palace near Apeldoorn in The Netherlands six years after it had been organised there for the first time in 1976.
In 1971, the palace, which through the centuries had been used as a residence by the Dutch Royal Family, had been turned into a museum. Nowadays the stables house a large collection of carriages from the Royal Stables.
The host nation had two reasons to celebrate. First, there was the individual gold of Tjeerd Velstra, who had beat Hungarians Gyorgy Bardos and Laszlo Juhasz. Another source of joy was the team gold secured thanks to future Driving great Ijsbrand Chardon and Sem Groenewoud.
Hungary and Great Britain were awarded team silver and bronze respectively.
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and the then-FEI President, who had been individual champion two years previously, placed sixth individually.
