The magnificent royal parks at Windsor (GBR) provided the stunning backdrop of the fifth FEI Driving World Championship for Four-in-Hand.
It was a memorable event, which saw the victory of the British team, composed of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Alwyn Holder, and George Bowman.
Prince Philip, the longest serving FEI President (1964-1986), was instrumental for the introduction of Driving as an FEI discipline. During his FEI Presidency he helped develop the sport and standardise international rules. He became a hugely successful competitor himself, winning, apart from team gold in 1980, team bronze in 1978, 1982 and 1984. He placed sixth individually in 1982.
The Hungarian and Polish teams won silver and bronze respectively.
Gyorgy Bardos (HUN) repeated his victory from 1978 retaining the individual gold. Team champion George Bowman (GBR) was awarded individual silver and the bronze went to Tjeerd Velstra (NED).
