The FEI, with the help of the newly established International Jumping Riders Club, created in 1977, had come up with a new format. The big innovation was the introduction of a team competition.
The following formula was applied:
Table C competition, where the difference of time with the winner was divided by 2 and carried on as penalty points.
Nations Cup competition in two rounds counting for the team placings.
Table A competition in two rounds selecting the 20 individuals.
Change-of-horse final for the top 4.
This format proved very successful and was used for many years.
The British team composed of the 1970 World Champion David Broome/Philco, Derek Ricketts/Coldstream, Caroline Bradley/Tigre, and Malcolm Pyrah/Law Court won team gold, ahead of The Netherlands in silver and the USA in bronze.
Caroline Bradley became the first woman to win a medal at an FEI World Championship, albeit in a team event.
None of the British team champions made the individual final.
Gerd Wiltfang (FRG)/Roman became the first rider in the history of the World Championships to manage four clear rounds in the final change-of-horse competition and won individual gold.
Eddie Macken (IRL)/Boomerang was the runner up for the second time in a row due to a small time penalty on Johann Heins’ (NED) Pandur.
Michael Matz(USA)/Jet Run, who was in the lead after the third competition day, placed third ahead of Heins.
Gerd Wiltfang’s Roman and Eddie Macken’s Boomerang were the best horses having both gone clear in the four rounds.
