Switzerland was represented for the first time by two athletes.
Rodney Jenkins (USA) aboard Idle Dice were one of the most exciting pairings in history and Hickstead was their first World Championship. Idle Dice, known in the stables as Ike, was the first horse inducted into the United States Equestrian Team Show Jumping Hall of Fame. Idle Dice and Rodney Jenkins formed a bond that led to unprecedented success in American Jumping history, winning no less than 70 Grand Prix along with various Speed and Puissance classes, often all at the same show. They were on 16 Nations Cup teams.
Unfortunately, at his first World Championship, Jenkins was not familiar with the Table C competition, which opened the event. He placed sixth after the first competition and disappointing eighth overall.
Reigning World Champion David Broome on Sportsman and 1973 European Champion Paddy McMahon on Forge Mill, both representing Great Britain, placed fifth and sixth respectively and did not make the cut.
At the end of the final change-of-horse competition, Hartwig Steenken (FRG) and Eddie Macken (IRL) had a single fence down each and were forced into a jump off with their own horses. Steenken won the title with one fence down ahead of Macken, who finished on 8 penalties.
Hugo Simon (AUT) and Frank Chapot (USA) scored 8 penalties each but did not go for a jump off thus finishing tied for the bronze.
