Injuries In 2016 he broke his nose in a fall in the cross-country phase at Bramham Horse Trials in England. (yorkshirepost.co.uk, 12 Jun 2016)

In September 2013 he broke his shoulder in a fall in the cross-country phase at Ballindenisk Horse Trials in Ireland and missed the end of the eventing season. (yorkshirepost.co.uk, 12 Jan 2014)

During the 2010 Rolex Grand Slam in Lexington, KY, United States of America, his horse appeared to slip at the 20th fence and suffered a rotational fall. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and then transferred by helicopter to hospital. He broke the top of his shoulder, cracked his collarbone and sternum, as well as fracturing four ribs. He owns the 40-acre property Gadlas Farm in Shropshire, England, which he bought at age 26. In 2011 he launched an equestrian clothing line called Townend Direct. He also co-owns Harthill Stud, a breeding facility for event horses in Cheshire, England, with his business partner Nina Barbour.
