After completing his military service at the Sports School of the German Armed Forces in Warendorf, he spent two years training as a banker. Six months later he realised that working in a bank was not what he wanted to do and he decided to take on a career as a professional event rider. He went back to Warendorf and did a trainee and master certificate in horse riding, before going on to work and train with Rudiger Schwarz. After 10 years at Warendorf he moved to Sprockhovel, where Matthias Otto Erley offered him the chance to rent facilities and start his own business. (dirk-schrade.de, 04 Jul 2017)
