HSBC's TRAINING BURSARY WINNERS

At the centre of HSBC’s sponsorship is a commitment to the development of the sport of Eventing at every level. As part of their support of the HSBC FEI Classics™, HSBC have introduced a Training Bursary. This is a unique award which is presented to the highest placed rider never to have completed a 4 star level event. The winning rider receives a training voucher to the value of $1,000 which is spent on sessions with a trainer of the athletes choice approved by FEI and National Federation.

2013 HSBC TRAINING BURSARY WINNERS
Badminton (GBR) - Sarah Ennis (IRL)
Sarah Ennis (IRL), who finished 38th on Sugar Brown Babe and won the $1,000 HSBC Training Bursary for the most successful first-time  CCI4* completion, has been competing internationally for 20 years but had never been to Badminton before.
In 2012, she was second at Tattersalls CCI3* and was longlisted for the Irish team for the London Olympic Games. She also won the autumn Ballindenisk CIC3* (IRL) on BLM Diamond Dulux and was third on Sugar Brown Babe.
Ennis, 38, lives in Dunboyne, Co Meath, and runs Stellor Sport Horses. She is married and has a three-year-old son.
Sugar Brown Babe, an Irish Sport Horse, is an 11-year-old mare by Porsch, owned and bred by Miriam Murphy.
Lexington (USA) - Meghan O'Donoghue (USA)

Meghan O’Donoghue (USA), a member of the USA’s under-25 training squad, made a brilliant CCI4* début to win the HSBC Training Bursary worth $1,000.
Riding her own Pirate, an 11-year-old American Thoroughbred, O’Donoghue climbed from 25th place after the Dressage phase to eventual 11th, adding only four Cross Country time penalties and seven Jumping penalties.
She only rode in her first CCI3* last year, finishing 12th at Fairhill (USA) on Pirate, a horse she has produced from a youngster since she spotted him as a three-year-old on the racetrack, where he was being used to ‘pony’ racehorses to the start. O’Donoghue previously worked as barn manager and assistant trainer to Jan Byyny, and is now based in Illinois.

Adelaide (AUS) - Craig Barrett (AUS)
New South Wales professional Craig Barrett, leader after the Cross Country in Adelaide (AUS), produced a classy performance with Mr and Mrs Keith Osborne’s Sandhills Brillaire in today’s final Jumping phase to clinch the title at the second leg of the HSBC FEI Classics™ 2012/2013.
This was Craig’s first 4* event, for which he earned the HSBC Training Bursary, which is awarded at every leg of this prestigious series to the highest placed rider never to have previously completed a 4* event.
Pau (FRA) - Merel Blom (NED)
Merel Blom (NED), 26, who finished 13th on the nine-year-old Holsteiner Rumour Has It, won the HSBC Training Bursary worth $1,000 for the best CCI4* debut. She lay 26th after Dressage with a score of 52.2 and added 17.6 time penalties across country, completing with just two time faults in the final Jumping round.
“I thought it was an amazing competition,” said Blom. “So much happened on Cross Country day that I am thrilled to have done so well at my first four-star and with such a young horse.”
Blom, a student of Dutch law and finance at Rotterdam University, is trained by Dutch Jumping chef d’equipe Rob Ehrens and Dressage rider Sander Marynissen and says she is “looking for an Eventing trainer now!”
She bought Rumour Has It as a six-year-old. The horse had previously been Jumping in Germany and started Eventing as a seven-year-old with Blom.
Blom represented the Netherlands at the HSBC FEI European Eventing Championship at Luhmühlen in 2011, finishing 44th on Umberto DB
