FEI World Cup Update: Canadian League

17 December 2004

As the top two riders in the Canadian League World Cup standings, Eric Lamaze and Jill Henselwood have earned invitations to compete in the 2005 World Cup Final held April 20-25 in Las Vegas (USA).

Lamaze of Schomberg, ON, earned a total of 44 points to win the Canadian World Cup League. His 2004 World Cup season results included a victory in the $50,000 World Cup Qualifier at the CSI-W Tournament of Champion in Palgrave, ON, placing second in the $60,000 National Bank World Cup Qualifier at CSI-W L’International Bromont in Bromont, QC, and finishing tied for sixth in the $60,000 Grand Prix du Quebec World Cup Qualifier at the CSI-W Classique Internationale de Blainville in Blainville, QC.

Earning the majority of her points during a successful fall season spent south of the border in the United States, Henselwood of Oxford Mills, ON, placed fourth in the $40,000 World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix at the CSI-W Oaks Blenheim Fall Classic in San Juan Capistrano, CA, and a fifth place finish in the $40,000 Del Mar International Grand Prix in Del Mar, CA. As the top placed Canadian at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show in November, the final stop on the Canadian League World Cup circuit, Henselwood picked up another 13 points for her fourth place finish for a total of 34 points.

There was a three-way tie for third place with 24 points between Ian Millar of Perth, ON, Kelley Small of Ottawa, ON, and Keean White of Cambridge, ON. Under World Cup rules, the tie is broken using the best results, giving Millar the position of first reserve based on his second place finish in the $50,000 World Cup Qualifier at the CSI-W Tournament of Champions. Small will be the second reserve following her fourth place finish in the $40,000 Grand Prix of Los Angeles at the Los Angeles International Jumping Festival, CA.

Canada has claimed the annual indoor event on three occasions, setting records in the process. Mario Deslauriers remains the youngest rider to ever win the World Cup Final, claiming victory at the age of 19 in 1984, while Ian Millar and Big Ben were the first horse-rider combination to win back-to-back World Cup Finals in 1988 and 1989.

Jump Canada is a committee of Equine Canada responsible for all hunter, hunter equitation and jumper activities in Canada from the grass roots to the international level. Jump Canada is governed by a board of directors, the majority of whom are elected by the stakeholders in the sport.
