(, 09 Mar 2016) DEATH OF HICKSTEAD His horse Hickstead, on whom he became the first Canadian to win an individual showjumping gold medal at the Olympic Games, collapsed and died shortly after the pair had finished their round at the 2011 World Cup event in Verona, Italy. Tests later showed the animal had died of a ruptured aorta, which led to heart failure. "It was pretty emotional for me. He was a very, very special horse who was very exciting to watch. I think he did everything for the people who were watching him. We loved to win and we had the same energy, which turned into incredible things." Sport Specific Information
When and where did you begin this sport? He first rode at age 12. He reached grand prix level in showjumping in 1992, working in exchange for the opportunity to ride.
Why this sport? He was a successful junior and hunter rider and became a working pupil for coach George Morris in New Jersey, United States of America. His early work gave him experience as a catch rider, picking up rides on horses with which he was unfamiliar.
